The tax on gas per cubic meter has more than doubled in six years: from 35 cents per cubic meter of gas in 2018 to 70.5 cents in 2024. That's a more than doubling in six years. Customers who have a central heating boiler consume relatively the most gas. They therefore feel this increase in charges the most in their wallets. This is stated by Tom Schlagwein of Overstappen.nl in response to the news that the demand for central heating boilers remains high.
Research by RTL shows that central heating boilers are in high demand because there is no money to invest in a heat pump. This will be mandatory by 2026 for new customers. The group that cannot make the investment for a heat pump will suffer the most. Many customers therefore now quickly purchase a central heating boiler to be ahead of the legislation. A Feenstra spokesman says that the demand for central heating boilers is undiminished at the moment.
":In the short term, this development is quite understandable," Schlagwein states. "According to Vereniging Eigen Huis, a new heat pump quickly costs 6,000 euros. A central heating boiler costs much less (often around 2,000 euros including installation). The customers who can't make the more expensive investment are particularly affected by this: the gas tax rises every year and is only expected to rise further. Customers who cannot get off the gas as a result will start to notice this extra in their wallets."
It is therefore expected that customers with a central heating boiler will fall between two stools: the gas tax will only increase. As a result, the variable costs of a central heating boiler will only increase. "For those who can afford it and are still considering it, it is therefore wise to still consider making the more expensive investment in a heat pump. With rising taxes, this will pay off faster. We recommend including this in the calculation."
