"Households with a heat pump benefit the most now that the net-metering scheme remains in place," says Adriaan Cramer of Nefit Bosch. "Because netting takes place on an annual basis, surplus solar power in the summer can be offset against the power taken in the winter for heating the home."

On average, solar panel owners use only 30 to 40 percent of the power they generate themselves; the rest is fed back. However, the price they receive for the electricity they feed back is (much) lower than the tariff for the electricity they purchase. Cramer: "Because the balancing scheme is not being phased out, households with a heat pump can continue to draw their excess power in the winter for heating the home at no extra cost. So they are much less affected by the (much) lower feed-in tariff than households without a heat pump."

Thus, for solar panel owners who do not yet own a heat pump, purchasing one becomes especially interesting. Thus, by maintaining the net-metering scheme, the energy transition can get a boost.
