In 2023, 48 percent of electricity generation came from renewable sources such as solar, wind and water. From May to July, more than half of the electricity was renewable, with 57 percent in July. Production from renewable sources increased 21 percent in 2023, compared to a year earlier. Electricity production from fossil sources decreased. This reports CBS based on preliminary figures.
A total of 120 billion kWh of electricity was produced in 2023, up 1 percent from a year earlier. From fossil sources it was 58 billion kWh, down 12 percent from the previous year. Less electricity was produced from coal and natural gas, down 38 and 4 percent, respectively. This was partly due to the availability of cheaper wind and solar power.
Electricity from wind power increased by more than a third
Electricity production from renewable sources increased to 57 billion kWh in 2023. Electricity production from wind power increased 35 percent compared to the previous year to 29 billion kWh. This growth is partly due to an increase in the installed capacity of wind turbines, both onshore and offshore. The total capacity of wind turbines reached 11 GW in 2023.
Sun up by nearly a quarter
In 2023, 21 billion kWh of electricity was generated from solar energy. An increase of 24 percent compared to a year earlier. Major cause was the increase in installed capacity of solar panels(+ 4.3 GW).
From biomass, 7.0 billion kWh of energy was generated, 1.7 billion less than the previous year. This is partly because less biomass was fired in coal-fired power plants.
