"Sustainable construction makes an important contribution to preserving a natural living environment," Viega states. "In this regard, resource-saving installation products such as Viega press connection systems with environmental product declarations play a central role. These environmental product declarations (EPDs) are now available for download on the website in the product catalog." The EPDs meet the particularly stringent Type III standards. In addition to press connection systems, EPDs for other product series will also be prepared.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) or environmental product declaration provides standardized information on the environmental impacts of a building product, includingCO2 emissions and primary energy requirements. These declarations allow products from different manufacturers performing the same function to be compared with each other on sustainability criteria. This provides transparency for those involved in construction, such as architects, structural engineers and specialized designers. The resource consumption of a building throughout its life cycle can be objectively assessed with the EPDs. Certified, sustainable buildings are generally more energy-efficient in the use phase, more flexible in use, save resources during decommissioning and are therefore generally more interesting to market participants. In some cases, government subsidies for buildings are linked to proof of sustainability.
Viega EPDs comply with class type III
The EPDs for the various Viega press connection systems made of metal and plastic meet Type III and the requirements of leading certification bodies worldwide. They reflect the environmental impact from raw material extraction and material use through production and transport to disposal and possible recycling of the respective press connection system - according to the so-called cradle-to-grave principle. The methodology for this is defined in the ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards and is applied to Viega press connection systems by the ift Rosenheim testing and certification institute as an independent program holder. This most comprehensive life cycle analysis is increasingly demanded by leading building certification bodies, such as the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
Climate neutral by 2035
The sustainable use of potable water in building installations and the energy efficiency of heating and cooling systems have been among Viega's core competencies for decades. In addition to the product properties that are crucial for the sustainable operation of buildings, Viega is therefore also consistently working on increasingly resource-efficient production. The manufacturer of installation systems will be climate-neutral by 2035 at the latest. This will further improve the EPDs.
The current EPDs for the press connection systems Profipress (copper), Sanpress (bronze), Sanpress Inox and Temponox (stainless steel), Prestabo (galvanized steel), Megapress (nickel-plated steel ), Viega Smartpress(plastic), Geopress (bronze) and Seapress (CuNiFe alloy) can be downloaded from the Viega website. Other EPDs for Viega pre-wall systems (Prevista), drain technology, fittings, floor and wall heating systems (Fonterra) and components for drinking water management systems (AquaVip Solutions) are in preparation.
